NATASHA WARR AS MEDIA
TARGET AUDIENCE
I looked into Channel 4's research on social groups in the UK using the site called UK Tribes. It allowed me to look into more depth about my target audience for my magazine. I looked into the 'Urban' category where there were 4 cleart cateogies, these were:
- Get Paid Crew
- Stylers
- Trackies
- Wasteman
Urban socials are assoiated with enjoying music such as R'n'B, hip hop and rap. A quotation from UK Tribes on the Urban group:
"Members are proactive in their search for new sounds, getting behind new releases, picking up digital mix tapes and sharing them with their social networks".
As for fashion, typical 'street wear' is what is trending. They tend to wear anything from common sports brands to unique urban labels with snapbacks being the main item of clothing.
Get Paid Crew
Get Paid Crew are highly aspirational, driven by money and being their own boss.
More straight-laced than their innovative DIYer cousins and likely to be working hard to set up their own business, get a good job and make money, money, money – once connected to dodgy dealings, there is now a huge amount of respect for the success orientated GPCs.
Trackies
Trackies are laid back enthusiasts motivated by the need to chill, whether that’s gaming, watching films or listening to music.
They’re all about hanging out, playing sports and computer games, ordering pizza and getting their hands on a bit of weed! Typically seen as those with the potential to achieve but lacking in motivation, these guys just want to chill out man!
The one that I identified most with my target audience was called the 'Wasteman' which was a mixture of the Get Paid Crew and Trackies. The defition is:
Wasteman
Rebellious, loud and little bit dodgy
Part Trackie and part Get Paid Crew – this is the updated Chav, a low level wheeler dealer, likely to be shotting weed, wearing trackies and trading knock off trainers than being admired by other segments, in fact, most run a mile when they see them.
Therefore; the 'wasteman' is my target audience and would be between the ages of 16-21.
