MUSIC GENRE - INDIE ROCK

By Georgia Dye

WIKIPEDIA DEFINITION:

"Indie rock is a genre of alternative rock that originated in the United Kingdom in the 1980s. Indie rock was extremely diverse, with subgenres that include indie pop, jangle pop, and lo-fi, among others. Originally used to describe record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock. As grunge and punk revival bands in the US, and then Britpop bands in the UK, broke into the mainstream in the 1990s, it came to be used to identify those acts that retained an outsider and underground perspective. In the 2000s, as a result of changes in the music industry and the growing importance of the Internet, a number of indie rock acts began to enjoy commercial success, leading to questions about its meaningfulness as a term."

OUR DEFINITION:

We see indie rock as a genre which is liked by a certain group of people, people who are quite independant and range from shy to out-going. We see indie rock to be quite an alternative style of music and the artists' songs are very meaningful and can be very complex to understand the lyrics because of the mass and variety of similie's that allow the songs and the artists to let their songs go that little bit deeper. Indie rock artists tend to be very 'do it yourself' attitude as they mostly rise to their success/fame through the hard work of themselves, by playing in pubs and gigs, creating music and gradually gaining more and more fans leading to more and more fame, a great example of this is the band Arctic Monkeys. The music genre is all about the instruments, artists of this genre use all instrumental music and steers clear of any pre-made, autotuned, 'dubstep' music.
