EDITING STYLES
By Ellé Carrington
Editing is a type of correcting or successfully putting something together, like a music video.
In the process of making our music video, one of the most important stages, is editing. This includes putting the actual clips together to make a whole video, such as different shots and cuts. The video is usually edited to make the speed of the video and song go together well, this also includes ensuring the vocals from the singer are in sync with the song.
Editing may also include adding effects such as changing the lighting, to creat a more dull setting, or changing the colour. To relate the video to the music genre (indie rock), editing can also be used to change the effect to make the video seem older, or special effects to look like a film roll. Editing can be used also to begin and end the video such as using techniques like fading and transitioning.
Editing in Music Videos
The 1975 - Chocolate
The video begins in an old car park, linking to the indie genre. The camera i panned across the bonnet showing a faint outline of a man. A focus pull is shown, revealing the lead singer in the background and slowly removing the blur. This has been edited to draw the viewers attention the main singer.Jump cuts have been edited to put the music video together, leading the scene from the carpark to the shot of the band in the car. These cuts are quite quick and edgy, which goes well with the speed of the song, however some scenes showing a couple together have been cutted quite slowly to create a sensual mood. This has also been edited to show the shot in slow motion, creating a more romantic effect. Slow motion is also used for the smoke, which relates well with the indie genre, as it is a stereotypical symbol. The original video footage was full colour, however to fit the specific genre they wanted, the video effects changed so that the colour became black and white. By having this effect it creates a more dangerous and dreary atmostphere for the viewers, which is the usal vibe for indie rock music videos.
The video starts by showing a a plain building highlighting a man on top, looking into the distance. The camera gradually zooms into the building and figure before the song starts. As the music begins, a close up of the lead singer/main character of the music video is shown. The video has been edited so that text is imported on the screen, this includes the artist and title of the song. Focus pulls have been used throughout the music video, to shows the singers perspective and aslo to show the effect of something new being shown in the scene. Different speeds of cuts have been edited depending on the speed of the song, for example the chorus is faster, therefore the jump cuts are a lot quicker. When walking down the stairs the lighting has been edited to change the mood, the lighting jumps quickly changing from light to dark the setting also changed to something more dull. The camera movements give the impression that it has been filmed with a hand held camera, as the filming is very rough. This gives an edgy effect which goes well with the indie rock genre. Editing has also been used when changing the colour and shape of the peoples eyes in the video to create a sinister effect.
Bastille - Pompeii
Arctic Monkeys - Fluorescent Adolescent
The music video begins showing a car chase, revealing it being shot on a hand held camera, creating a bumpy effect, which gives and edgy feel to the video. The setting is very vinateg and worn down showing a rusty car and building. The video shows a figh scene between different characters, the costumes are all quite dirty looking and the patterns seen relate to the indie genre, such as the chekcs and plain dirt colours. The editing has included jump cuts during that scene which are very quick to keep up the momentum, this also links to the speed of the music which aslo became a lot quicker. The colour of the video as a whole is quite dull and the quality isnt the best, this gives the audience the impression that the video is quite old. A blur effect has been used in the video to show a different perspective, by showing what the man who is being beat up is seeing. The blur then fades into another clip showing a memory from the past. A slidshow of old photos are also displayed in the music video to give the audience an insight of one fo the characters childhood. Quick jump cuts are used again towards the end of the music video to build tension and also to finish the fight scene and be in rythem with the fast beats in the song.
